چکیده

background: diabetes mellitus is one of the most important diseases in all over the world. insulin and its receptor are found in specific area of cns with a variety of regions-specific functions different from its role in direct glucose regulation in the periphery. the hippocampus and cerebral cortex distributed insulin and insulin receptor has been shown to be involved in brain cognitive functions. previous studies about the effect of insulin on memory in diabetes are controversial and further investigation is necessary. methods: seventy male nmri rats (250-300 g) were randomly divided into control, diabetic, saline-saline, saline-insulin (12, 18 or 24 mu), diabetic-saline, diabetic-insulin (12, 18 or 24 mu) groups. diabetes was induced by streptozotocin (65 mg/kg, ip). saline or insulin were injected bilaterally (1 µl/rat) into ca1 region of hippocampus during 1 min. thirty minutes later, water maze training was performed. results: insulin had a dose dependent effect. the spatial learning and memory were impaired with diabetes, and improved by insulin. escape latency and swimming distance in a water maze in insulin treated animals were significantly lower (p<0.05) than control and diabetic groups. percentage of time spent by animals in a target quarter in probe trial session showed a significant difference among groups. this difference was significant between insulin treated and the other groups (p<0.05). conclusions: our findings suggest that injection of insulin into hippocampal ca1 area may have a dose-dependent effect on spatial learning and memory in diabetic rats.

Effect of Intra-CA1 injection of estrogen on spatial memory and learning in rats

Introduction: Sexhormones are one of most important factors in difference of learning and memory between tow sexes (male & female). High concentration of estrogen and androgen receptors and mechanism of testosterone and estrogen production in learning and memory center, especially in hippocampus show the role of this receptors, sexhormons and P450 enzymes in spatial memory. Consequently, in thi...

effects of pioglitazone injection into hippocampal ca1 area on spatial learning and memory deficits in rats

background: pioglitazone from thiazolidinediones generation, represent a new antidiabetic drugs that have been introduced in the world recently. thiazolidinediones can improve insulin resistance by activating the nuclear peroxoxisome proliferator activated receptor-γ (ppar-γ) and increasing insulin sensitivity in their receptors. insulin and its receptors are found in specific areas of cns with...

The Effect of Intrahippocampal Injection of Ascorbic Asid on Spatial Learning and Memory in Adult Male Rats

Introduction: Ascorbic acid (AA) is present in high concentrations with heterogeneous distribution in the mammalian brain. Previous studies have shown that release of various neurotransmitters such as glutamate, acetylcholine and dopamine might be involved in the central AA release. On the other hand all of these neurotransmitters and the region CA1 of the hippocampus are involved in learnin...

The effect of Crocin on scopolamine induced spatial learning and memory deficits in rats

Introduction: The cholinergic system plays an important role in learning and memory. Administration of either extracts of Crocus Sativus (Saffron) or its constituent, crocin, reduced ethanol-induced memory impairment. Based on the above findings, we investigated the effect of crocin in antagonizing spatial learning and memory impairment induced by scopolamine, a cholinergic receptor antagoni...

A comparative study on the effect of intrahippocampal CA1 area injection of esradiol benzoate and sesame oil on learning and memory in adult male rats

Estrogen has a vast and complex role on higher brain abilities such as learning and memory. On the other hand, sesame oil (SO) (as a vehicle in the steroids structure) has a different effect on body function. So, in this study the effect of intrahippocampal injection of estradiol benzoate (EB) and SO on spatial learning and memory in adult NMRI male rats was investigated. The animals were anest...
